This course is of particular value to medical secretaries, receptionists, typists and those seeking employment in the health services. Legal practitioners specialising in cases dealing with personal injury, workcover, motor vehicle accident claims and medical negligence would also be aware of the advantages to their practice of an accurate understanding and correct usage of medical terms and how such knowledge favourably impacts on their ability to provide a more valuable and meaningful service to their clients.

A richly illustrated manual forms the basis of the course which guides the student through a study of the systems of the body over a period of thirteen weeks. Definitions and descriptions of over 1000 terms are drawn from anatomy, physiology, embryology and medical science. There are also special sections devoted to obstetrics, neonatology and cytogenetics.

Weekly revision exercises invite students to tune in to the medical soap opera, "Thirteen Weeks in the Life of the Niggles Family" where they will follow the medical trials and tribulations of the ficticious characters Sanguino, Narcissia, Malaisia and Brutus Niggles

Students participating in Medical Terminology Queensland courses at the very minimum are provided with the correct spelling, pronunciation and definition of over a thousand terms. At the same time, with the aid of a large number of overheads, background anatomical, physiological and embryological information is demonstrated to assist in understanding how various pathological conditions have arisen. Diagnostic and surgical procedures associated with specific forms of disease states are also described.

CERTIFICATE

At the completion of the course, provided that submitted assignments have met an appropriate standard, Medical Terminology Queensland awards a Certificate of Attainment in Medical Terminology (Adv.) The certificate is not a 'diploma' or 'degree' and could not be used as a prerequisite for a degree course. Students are not required to sit a formal examination. Examination is by progressive assessment.
